Diapers, a necessary, and expensive, evil when you have a kiddo running around. Yes, it’s only temporary, but those 2-3 years can REALLY add up. I won’t even try to figure out how much we spend a month, it’s way to expensive.

I’m not the type who has to buy the most expensive product out there, just because I think it’s better. I’ve been in advertising/marketing/design business way too long to fall for that. Plus, as Dad-oo will confirm, I’m a frugal shopper (although he would probably use a different word). I’ll sae money any way, any time that I can. Especially on something that we use so often, like diapers.

When Eli was first born, we had a nice stock pile from our baby shower, all different brands, all different sizes. I didn’t really pay attention to the differences between brands, but I sure noticed when they didn’t work. As was the case with the Target brand diapers (now called Up & Up) when Eli was still and infant. When he was small, they were terrible. Leaked everything, no matter the quantity or consistency. We made it through the pack we had (I didn’t want them to go to waste after all) and then swore not to use them again. And I would have stuck to that, except we had another pack, in the next size up. So when Eli reached that size, I gave it a try. And to my utter surprise, they worked! For a while. Once he hit the crawling stage, they just couldn’t keep up, and we had to switch again (to [amazonify]B0012MC87S::text::::Luvs,[/amazonify] more affordable that [amazonify]B0017IAGHG::text::::Huggies[/amazonify] or [amazonify]B000VHU3V8::text::::Pampers[/amazonify], but they worked just as well).

Recently, Target went through a re-branding of their product line. I don’t know if the product actually change, or just the packaging, but my frugal side, and curiosity, got the best of me. I caved in and picked up a small pack to test out. And so far, so good! We’ve been using them for about 1.5 months now without incident. Except of course on those rare occasions when nothing could contain the mess. Ewwww…

Compared to other brands out there, the Up & Up diapers are not the most luxurious ones available. The outside of the diaper is a little rougher than some. It doesn’t irritates Eli skin, but they do have a slight paper feel instead of the soft fabric feel of some more expensive brands. And they don’t have all of the cute Blues Clues characters running all over them. Instead they sport blue and green circles (which Eli loves to pop) and work since Eli is a boy. I do wish that they had a version with pink and yellow dots, for those momma’s with little girls running around.

For now, these are working for us. And man do they same some money. A pack of 84 Up & Up diapers, size 4, runs around $14 at our Target store. While a pack of 54 Huggies Snug and Dry diapers, size 4, run around $16.99. That’s 32 more diapers for $3 less. Although, based on past experience, I do expect that at some point they will stop working, we’ll continue buying them. Every little bit helps.

I’m working my way through a pack of those, and they do seem to work pretty well. We’ve had a couple incidents of leaky leg holes, but, well, I’m not sure anything would have saved us there…
