A few weeks ago we started telling Eli that Christmas was coming. We tried to teach him Merry Christmas, which, when translated by his 21 month old mind, turned in Happy Birthday! I’m not really sure the stream of thought behind that one, but I think it went something like this.
Momma wants me to say what? Are you kidding me? I’m only 21 months old, I can’t say that. But she’s looking at me with those big puppy dog eyes, expecting that I can say these words. And look at Dad-oo over there, watching me but probably really thinking about the next ninja move he wants to teach me. And the pugs, waiting desperately for a chance to jump on Momma’s lap. Well, I’ll show them, I’m going to sit on her lap. Haha! Wait, why is everyone looking at me like I’m supposed to do something. Not sure what they want, but this always gets a laugh: “Happy Birthday!”
I’m pretty sure that’s what happened.
So we went with it. Grams first introduced “Happy Birthday Baby Jesus” which sometimes was translated to Happy Birthday Grandpa, but the more we worked with it, the more it was Baby Jesus’ birthday (or sometimes Momma’s, since my birthday is so close to Christmas). But as time passed, we did eventually get the kiddo to say this.
Eli, what does Santa say?
Ho, ho, Merry Christmas! (yes, he always dropped the third ho)
As I’m sitting here, stuffing my face with homemade doughnuts, cookies, homemade Irish Cream, wathing Dad-oo deep fry the contents of our fridge (with my cell phone in hand in case something explodes) and dreaming of homemade pizza and driving around looking at houses all decorated for Christmas, I’m also remembering what today is about. Baby Jesus’ birth, his life, his death and everything that means for us.
Happy Birthday Baby Jesus!
