Those of you regular readers know that I am embarking on a New Year’s healthy lifestyle change, and a very challenging 30 Day No Sweets Challenge. Wait, you haven’t heard? Well, check it out here.
One of the things I’ve decided to do is eat breakfast. I know, it seems like a logical thing to do each morning. But most of my mornings are spent feeding the kiddo, doing dishes, getting bread in the bread machine, feeding the dogs, picking up the house, getting myself showered and presentable, and then heading out to our various playgroups and gatherings. Most days, I just don’t eat breakfast, but I end up nibbling throughout the morning. Sometimes on cereal. Sometimes on Eli’s leftover breakfast. Sometimes on five one piece of chocolate. Hey, that’s my reward for all of the things I had to get done during the morning!
Anyway, since I’m also limiting refined sugar from my diet, it’s important to me that my breakfast isĀ easy, healthy, tasty and has little sugar in it. And easy. Did I mention easy? So of course, cereal is the best answer. I’m glad to say that I found a line of cereals that will be reducing the sugar count in many of their brands. Wahoo!
What is this wonderful brand of cereals. Why it’s General Mills of course! Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Honey Nut Cheerios, just to name a few.
Why do I love these cereals so much?
- They have recently committed to reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving – I love this!
- Ready-to-eat cereal is the number 1 source of whole grains in kid’s diets – And it’s so easy!
- Frequent cereal eaters tend to have healthier body weights and lower Body Mass Index measures – Important for everyone!
- Children who eat breakfast tend to perform better at school – Who doesn’t want that?
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Want to learn more about the health benefits for kiddos who eat cereals? Check out Cereal Health and Wellness.

Best of all, Eli loves cereal. Cheerios were his first solid food, and once he figured out this thing we call eating, he wolfed them down. Today, he loves a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast. And who can blame him, they are pretty darn tasty.

My goal for January is to be more consistent with breakfast, too. I’ve noticed my older children often leave in the morning without eating anything and have decided that must stop! My favorite cereal, unfortunately, is Reeses Peanut Butter Crunch. Pretty sure it isn’t exactly healthy (or chocolate free), but it is a start…
@Charlotte, Reeses Peanut Butter Crunch is still better than, say, candy or a chocolate bar! and just as tasty. Yum yum.
