A Scary Story
I’m not sure why, but this story popped into my head the other day. It happen abut a million years ago, before Eli was even in the picture. Well, that’s not entirely true, I was about 6 weeks pregnant at the time.
We were vacationing in St. Louis, visiting the Arch, walking the city, eating so great food at a quaint little coffee shop called The Soulard Coffee Garden (Dad-oo highly suggest the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict). And some terrible food with this cheesy substance they call Provel. Let me tell you, it is not cheese, or anything even close to cheese. We also spontaneously went to a baseball game, which isn’t something that I would normally do. But the Brewers were playing the Cardinals and we had a free afternoon. So that’s what we did.
It was really freaking hot at the game. We picked the best time of year to visit, the beginning of August. Being newly pregnant and all, I wasn’t always in the best of moods (yes, I can admit, I was extremely mood in the beginning) but being able to sit for a few hours was nice. Even if I was cramped into the teeny tiny stadium seats.
But I digress. My story takes place toward the end of the game. There was a father on a special outing with his two children, no older than eight, sitting in front us. A son and daughter. They all seemed to be having fun, everyone was behaving, even in the sweltering heat. All-in-all it seemed like a fun outing. But…the dad decided that he needed to use the restroom and he didn’t want to drag his two children with him (understandably). So he turned to us. Two complete strangers, in a big city, in the middle of a ballpark. He asked us to watch his children while he went to the potty (OK, not his actual words).
In shock and awe, we agreed, with wild thoughts going through out heads. Why on earth would he trust us? For all he knows, we could run off with his children (of course we wouldn’t, but still). Was this a modern day, I’m-going-out-for-cigarettes-only-to-never-return stunt? Were we going to be left with these two children abandoned by their father? Or was this some sort of set-up, where we would be accused of kidnapping? I think I watch too many Dateline-type shows.
A few minutes later, the father returned without incident, and he soon left, with his children in tow. But I can’t help but wonder, what on earth was he thinking? And what would his wife do to him if she ever found out?
So I ask you, my dear bloggy friends, how would you have handled this situation?

That is so freaky, I don’t even know how I would have reacted. I can’t even imagine it! Probably sat in shock till he came back and have it bother me from time to time?

@Charlotte, He’s lucky that he asked us, and not some creepy couple. Someone was watching out for his kids that day.
Wow, I probably would’ve been shocked and done the same as you. And I certainly NEVER would ask someone I don’t know to watch my kids for a minute. Some parents just don’t know that or realize it though.

@Tabitha Blue, I bet he just wasn’t thinking, but still, the story could have turned out much worse for him if he had picked the wrong couple to ask.
In your shoes, I probably would have done the same thing. But now thinking about it, What I rather hope I’d say is “I’m sorry, I am not comfortable being responsible for children I do not know.” Now that you have a wee one, what would you do if you were in the same situation again?
@June, I’d probably do the same thing, knowing that nothing bad would happen to the kids. If I refused and the dad found someone else, and something happened to the kids, I’d never forgive myself.
WOW! You know that men don’t think like we do. He probably honestly thought that you two looked trustworthy and that he’s be back in a minute. Now, I would NEVER EVER leave my children like that and I can honestly say that my husband wouldn’t either.
But, I would have watched his kids just like he asked. That’s just how I am. If I can help, I do. I really don’t think I would have thought much about it – besides being shocked that he asked!
