Gluten-Fail

The Fail Whale

I’m not good with letting people down. Or letting myself down. And I kind of feel like I’ve done both this week.

After I went on, and on about my gluten-detox, I failed. Actually, it’s really hard for me to admit it.

On Tuesday evening, Dad-oo and I had some business to tend to (more on that later, hopefully) which took us out of town for most of the evening, including dinner. Before we headed home, we needed some grub. Something quick. Something close. Something cheep. And so, we picked Subway.

Now, you may be wondering (or maybe not, if you already figured out where I’m going with this), what delightful gluten-free item did I find at Subway. Well, the answer to that is a veggie pizza. Only it wasn’t gluten-free.

I caved. McDonald’s just doesn’t do it for me, and I don’t know if their salads are GF or not. I LOVE Subway pizzas, I was tired and all I could think about was the bready, cheesy-goodness.

But here’s the thing. I don’t feel any different. Not immediately after I ate. Not the next day. I feel exactly the same.  In fact, I don’t feel any different than I did almost 3 weeks ago when I started the detox. Which leads me to believe that I’m doing all of this for nothing.

So that’s my big, fat FAIL of the week.

But it brings up a few important questions for my gluten-free friends out there.

If I do in fact have a gluten sensitivity, should I be feeling different already? Wouldn’t I have had some reaction to eating the pizza (and, if I’m being completely honest, a few cookies when we got home)? Am I doing this all for nothing?

Going Gluten Free is a VERY tough thing. I keep thinking that I’m going to do it myself, but it’s such a struggle.

I have a friend who was diagnosed with celiac not long ago. I think it took her about 2 weeks to really feel a difference, if I remember hearing her stories well.

I have several friends with celiac and they had an instant reaction. Mostly when they accidentally have something with gluten in it. That’s when it hits them. So if you went 3 weeks without and then had something like the pizza? Chances are you don’t have celiac. You may still have an intolerance and could just limit the amount of gluten you eat….but you’d probably know for sure if you were at this point.

@Mrs Soup, That’s what I was thinking too. I’m glad that I made it as long as I did. At least now I know that I probably don’t have Celiac (phew). It was definitely a learning experience though. I’m glad that I did it.

Allison, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, you may still be Celiac even though you did not ‘feel’ any differently when you ate gluten. Many individuals who suffer with Celiac disease have no gastrointestinal symptoms at all! Celiac disease is a great hider and it is really only recently that Physicians are recognizing the many forms that Celiac can take. There was an excellent article in one of my husband’s medical journals (I’ll have to get back to you later on which one, because my teething son is FINALLY asleep on my lap!!!) about this hidden epidemic. Eliminating gluten from your diet is difficult and expensive. I really strongly recommend having the test done, speak with your doctor. There are MANY additional problems that can develop if you are an undiagnosed Celiac and continue to ingest gluten. Celiac disease is not an allergy it is an autoimmune disorder triggered by a dietary substance. If you think you may have it, be tested.

@hippie4ever, I’d love to read the article, please send it my way.

I may end up getting tested (although I was warned that I need to be eating gluten before the test to get accurate results). I have been going to acupuncture right now for the same reasons I was trying gluten-free. If it doesn’t work, I’ll be heading back to my doctor.

I hope your teething son slept for a long time!

Don’t beat yourself up too bad. What led you to go off gluten? Did you test positive for celiac?
