Growth Spurt Anyone?

So, apparently after a child hits two years old, they don’t stop growing.

I know, I was surprised too.

Actually, the opposite seems to happen. Suddenly they are about 6 feet tall and eating you out of house and home.

OK, OK, I may have exaggerated that a little. But only the 6 feet part. The kiddo is growing at an alarming speed. It seems like just last week he was barely able to reach the dinning table. Now, he can reach to the middle of it, grabbing whatever object we put there, thinking that it was safe and out of harms way.

So, in case you were wondering how I knew that the kiddo was going through yet another growth spurt, here’s an example of his meals lately.

  1. 1 Cinnamon-topped oatmeal muffin
  2. 1 Cup of milk (6 oz)
  3. 1.5 handfuls of Honey Nut Cheerios
  4. 1 Handful of raisins
  5. Another cup of milk (6 more oz)
  6. 1.5 more handfuls of Honey Nut Cheerios
  7. Another handful of raisins
  8. This is just for breakfast.
  9. 2 hours later, he’s hungry.
  10. AGAIN.

For lunch and snacks, the amount of food that he consumes is insane. I think it’s more that I eat in a single day.

And this morning, when I got him up in the morning, I swear he was 2 inches taller.

Can someone tell me, how do I stop him from growing so quickly? He’s not my baby anymore, hasn’t been for a while, but that doesn’t mean that I want him to grow up so quickly.

Thursday is coming up fast. I hope you will join me in this week’s Thank You Journal. What are you thankful for this week?

My kid’s doing just the opposite – seems like she’s hitting a plateau. Some days I’m hoping she’d grow quickly because there is so much I want to do with her, and then other days I chide myself for being so silly because the moments I long for in the future may still come but the ones I wished away are gone forever.

@Justine, I’m the same way, I can’t wait for my son to get bigger so we can do more fun things together. But at the same time, I’m really going to miss this stage.

My son was 2 last week. He’ll be 9.5 in a few more. It goes so quickly.

@Jack, These past 2 years have gone so quickly. Everyone says it goes fast, but I really had no idea.

@Allison, I understand. It used to drive me nuts when parents would talk about how fast time moves. But I understand it now.

She’s so tall, that a 5T dress hits her above the knee!! :O

I hear you! I remember when Lydia was little she ate a yogurt, frozen waffle AND a banana for breakfast—regularly! That’s freaky!

It’s a good thing my love grows with them…b/c they grow too fast! ;)

@Amy, I’m pretty sure we will have to take out a loan when my son is a teenager. There’s no way our budget will keep up with him!

@mandi@itscome2this, Yup, we’ve been in the won’t eat a bite stage too. Frustrating, all of that wasted food.

I think it all evens out somehow. When my daughter was 2, she’d go through a phase when she could out-eat her Daddy and I. She would eat two whole PB & J sandwiches, a full cup of milk, and be asking for more! But then at other times, she ate half a chicken nugget and 6 Cheerios all day. It’s strange how they seem to grow no matter what!

@Jeni, That’s very true. A few weeks ago my son would barely touch his meals.

It’s feast or famine with my son. He eats everything in sight all day long…or picks and hardly eats anything. Little booger.

Around here it’s my baby that’s on a nonstop eat-a-thon. Last night for dinner he ate more – literally – than my husband. He just turned one (my baby, not my husband :) ) and I honestly don’t know where the food goes!

I love it and my kiddos have always eaten like that! My 4 year old even asks for food in the middle of the night sometimes. I should add they are both healthy weights… :) But I think that they just grow when they do- and that’s often!

I am right there with you. But my just-now-two-year-old has been overeating for all of his two years! So I guess I was prepared…
When I got home today, he asked for a hot dog (don’t hate me – we’ve been hosting a lot of barbecues). HIS THIRD.

@Leslie, My son LOVES hot dogs too. Yesterday he was listing of the things he loves, and they were at the top of the list.

I am totally with you here! Luke is also growing at an alarming speed and I can’t keep my fridge and cabinets stocked for him. It’s unbelievable. Last night he ate an entire turkey burger on a roll, a cup of blueberries, a corn on the cob, a cup of strawberries, 2 cups of milk, 8 ritz crackers and an oreo. I was shocked.
