I’m pretty sure that this week’s Budget Boot Camp was throw in just for me. The challenge? Make something yourself.
Seriously? This is my favorite challenge by far, since I do this every week anyway. Here’s just an example of the foods that I make, from scratch.
Honestly, this is only a small list. Check out my recipe page for everything.
One non-food item that I’ve been making lately is an every day shower cleaner. You know, the kind you spray on the shower stall after a shower, and then walk away? The kind that does not involved scrubbing or terrible fumes of any kind.
That’s my kind of cleaning.
And it saves me money. With just a few ingredients I have a cleaner that works just as well as the store-bought kind, but it’s cheaper and green {no countless bottles to throw away}. The recipe is below.
With this week’s challenge Beth sent a list of her and Clair’s favorite things to make at home, and I’m so intrigued by a few that they are definitely on my list to try. Especially the homemade versions of soaps, cleaners and even facial masks. Those are the kind of things that throw my budget off. Here’s what I plan on making in the coming weeks.
- Liquid hand soap – Picking up the ingredients next week!
- Laundry Soap
- Dishwasher Soap
- Avocado Facial Mask – I’m so doing this, this week. After the months of sun, my skin needs some serious spa treatment.
Daily Shower Spray
- 3 cups rubbing alcohol
- 1 tablespoon dish soap
- 4 tablespoons rinse detergent
- 3 quarts water
- scented oil {your favorite scent, as much as is needed}
- 1/2 cup – 2/3 cup peroxide {depending on bottle size}
Mix all ingredients except peroxide in a large container, with a lid. This makes a lot, and be saved for future use.
For a 24 oz bottle, add 1/2 cup peroxide. Fill the rest of the bottle with the pre-mixed solution.
For a 32 oz bottle, add 2/3 cup peroxide. Fill the rest of the bottle with the pre-mixed solution.

Is this homemade mixture for the bathroom safe for marble and granite?
I have no idea MaryBeth. Sorry! I wish I could be more help.
I made my own laundry soap for a long while. I think I just got tired of dingy clothes or something because I stopped (I can’t really remember why). It was okay. Like I said, my clothes were always dingy. I didn’t use stain spray then, because I was doing it to avoid chemicals.
I also used to make all our bread. My husband got sick of it though and now we’re back to store bought loaves. No appreciation for good bread, that one!
I’ve heard that about homemade laundry detergent. That’s part of the reason I haven’t taken the plunge and made it yet.
Your husband doesn’t like homemade bread? What?!?!?!? How can that possibly be?
Oh, he likes it. Just not as our “regular” bread. Not for sandwiches or PB toast. He was raised on good old white bread so what can ya do *shrug* I’ve at least got him onto whole wheat. Baby steps.
I have a recipe coming soon for White Whole Wheat flour. It’s as close to white bread as you can get, and still have whole grains. It might be worth a shot.
I’m impressed! I can never get the texture of crackers right. I’m also trying to make condiments from scratch.
Maybe I am a little dense but what is “rinse detergent”? Thanks!
Rinse detergent is Jet Dry or a similar product, that you add to the dish washer to help dishes rinse off clean.
By rinse detergent, do you mean “downey, or jet dry” like products??
Thx! Cant wait to try!!
Yup! I usually use Jet Dry.
