Why December Birthdays are Awesome

by Allison @ Alli 'n Son on December 19, 2010

It’s my birthday. Today. The 19th. Every year on the same day. No matter what I do to try and stop it.

I used to want to be 25 forever. It seemed like the best age possible. Expendable money {i.e. no kids}. No responsibilities. Just me and hubs. I was working a job that I loved and through had career-long possibilities {man, was I wrong about that one}. It just seemed like the ideal age.

Now, thinking back, there’s no way that I would want to be 25 again. You don’t know anything. You spend money on crap that you don’t need, when you should be saving it. You drink more than you should. You watch way too much TV and spend way too much seeing movies in the theater. It’s kind of a wasteful age.

I’m not really sure that the perfect age is anymore. I’m pretty darn happy at 32. Even if writing that out makes me cringe a little. My needs are met, and many of my wants are fulfilled. I’m raising the best son in the world with the help of a supportive and hands-on husband. I’m closer to my sisters now than I have ever been before. I have a wonderful network of friends who have my back.

Christmas/Birthday Celebration 2010

Life is pretty darn good.

So, you know what, instead of wishing that I could stay one age forever, I’m just going to enjoy the age that I’m at. It’s just a number, it doesn’t define who I am. So. There.

I have to say that having a December birthday gets a pretty bad rap. People claim that birthday presents are smaller because it’s so close to Christmas. Or that birthday parties aren’t as extravagant. You know what? I think that’s crap. December birthday’s are pretty freaking awesome. What better way to prove it than with a good old top ten list.

Top Ten Reasons December Birthday’s Are Awesome

  1. I get presents all month long. While everyone else just gets presents once or twice.
  2. December is pretty much one long party month. And it feels like they are all for me {except for the big one, Christmas. Obviously.}
  3. Even Mother Nature gets in the act, decorating with layers of fluffy, sparkling snow. Way better than lame streamers.
  4. I get Christmas cards sent just to me. OK, they are really birthday cards, but whatever. They’re still just for me.
  5. Like a million people wish me happy birthday on Facebook. Wait, that happens year round? Whatever.
  6. Gifts all the time. You can’t underestimate the power of days upon days of presents.
  7. Twitter flocks to me with birthday wishes. Even if I do have to announce that it’s my birthday first. Don’t you dare tell me that doesn’t happen only in December.
  8. All of the stores and restaurants are decked out. Just for my birthday.
  9. Screw the birthday cake, I’m surrounded by cookies and COOKIE CAKES, month long.
  10. Many, many days of gifts. For example: I received a gift on Friday fr my b-day. Gifts on Saturday for my b-day. Then gifts on Saturday for Christmas. Gifts today, Sunday, for my b-day. I’m sure I’ll receive random gifts throughout the week. I mean really, it’s my birthday people! Gifts on Friday for Christmas. Gifts on Saturday for Christmas. And even into January I’ll be receiving gifts.

So there it is. December is probably the best month ever to have a birthday. I think I actually feel sorry for anyone who doesn’t have a birthday in December. Maybe I’ll pass along some of my extra cookies, just to make you feel better. Nah.

Happy Birthday!
My birthday is on Tuesday, and I LOVE having a December birthday…it’s like the best thing ever! :)
When I was a kid I loved it b/c it was like the presents didn’t stop for several weeks. Now, it’s not so much but I still enjoy it!

You make a pretty convincing argument for Christmas birthdays. However, as someone whose birthday very often falls on Mother’s Day I’m not entirely convinced. Seriously, it’s the double gift that bugs me most.
